TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE

To Take Charge of Your life, Be Intentional about Influence
To take charge of your life, you must be Intentional about Leadership . Influence is to persuade somebody to buy a product, consider a service, believe a way of life, buy into an idea, a company, an enterprise, or just to a better life.
We all have the chance and the opportunity to influence somebody else’s thinking, their future, or their life. The key is to develop the skills to do it. You can influence people casually, haphazardly, or intentionally. The key to
influence people on purpose is to learn the skills of how to do it.

To Take Charge of Your life, Be Sincere
To take charge of your life, you must be sincere. To accomplish something, you have to be sincere. “Sincerity is not a test of truth. Don’t make a mistake of saying “he must be right because he’s so sincere; the reason is that it’s possible to be sincerely wrong.
You have to decide for yourself what is truth. You have to learn to “weigh sincerity on sincerity scale and weigh truth on truth scale.” Don’t weigh truth on sincerity scale.

To Take Charge of Your life, Search for New Ideas
To take charge of your life, you must search for new ideas. Ideas are not that far away. “Everything you need is within reach.” The ideas you need to change your life or your business is within reading reach, it’s within listening reach.
There is a probably a library not too far from most people but the problem is “most people drive by the library, few people stop by.” For example, KENYA libraries are free but very few go to read there. The key is not that it’s within reach; the key is who is going to reach.
There is a simple Bible phrase that says “if you search, you will find.” It’s very important to know that “finding is reserved for the searchers.” “You don’t find what you need; you find what you search for.”
Neediness is not the prerequisite for getting value.” “You can’t be a needer; you have to be a searcher.” But if you search, if you try, if you go, if you listen, ideas are within reach. “There is nothing so powerful as an idea who time has come.”
A business idea, social idea, investment idea, good health idea, social idea, all you need is a refinement of an idea to make an impact in your life.

To Take Charge of Your life, Go some extra miles
To take charge of your life, you must be willing to go some extra miles. It doesn’t take much to make a significant difference as life passes. A small difference in a change of discipline, or a change of thinking, can start you on journey to happiness, instead of regrets.
It’s very important to know if you are headed towards happiness or regrets 10 years from now . The key is to start right now to make the little changes to walk this new road. Just a few daily disciplines make a great deal of difference in one year, three years, five years, ten years from now.
“ Ten years from now, you will surely arrive, the question is where?”

You are doing enough things (say 10%) to have arrived at where you are today. You might think you need to do about 90% to make the difference for your life. Maybe all you need is that extra 5-10% of intellectual change, activity change, a refinement of disciple or a refinement of thought. Just a few changes in your reading discipline, few disciplines of the mind, few disciplines of activity.
All you need is the ideas to make these simple changes and the equity starts gathering. “Now is the time to fix the next 10 years .” For example, are you reading the book that will take you where you want to go in the next 10 years ?

Science of Love

Did you know that love can be explained? There are three neurotransmitters involved in attraction. Dopamine, adrenaline and serotonin.

Dopamine makes you feel good, it has the same effect on your brain as doing cocaine. That’s how you get addicted to that idiot… Yes come beat…

This is where couples show higher dopamine levels, you find that you have suppressed hunger, high energy, higher ability to focus, some even become expert poets and less need for sleep. Remember those late night chats? Haki this explains why am hungry all the time and i sleep like newborn babies.

Haisuru, where were we? Ooh yes Adrenaline. When you start to fall in love with a person, your stress response is activated. This increases the level of adrenaline and cortisol in your blood. Now this explains why you might have sweat palms and a racing heart when you see your new lover. Hii Ni matatizoo.

Anywho, next up serotonin. Serotonin levels have actually been shown to drop in people who are in love. This can be compared to someone with OCD, and no most of you don’t have OCD, i mean obsessive compulsive disorder. You know the jumpy jumpy and anxiety kind? This explains the anxiety and nervousness.

All this chemical talk has got me thinking about pheromones. You know those chemicals that animals and humans produce to attract mates? This explains why Tinder is not a good idea… Pheromones are excreted through the skin and can be found on your tears and sweat. They can help you get the right genetically compatible mate. Imagine scientists did this research where women would smell a shirt worn by different men. And guess what? They choose someone who DNA is different from their own. Kuddos evolution.

Now how does all this work? Well all your senses play part in this. Pheromones use our sense of smell, and our sense of sight is another big determinant. That big gluteus Maximus and the sight of good melons. Kaa hapo ukifloat. Well, see that cute human being over there? Stop looking I was just messing with you. Anyway our instinct is to be visually attracted to that person who shows characteristics of being fit for reproduction. Or in some cases just the first part of it.

Our ears also contribute to this attraction business. Hearing a person’s voice along with the way they speak in some cases higher or lower levels of attraction. While sense of touch can be a very important part of anyone’s relationship. It really can make or break the beginning of stages. Many people become uninterested in a person after a bad first kiss or hunkie pankie… (don’t judge me, my kids might read this in the future). But are they making a bigger deal out of it? Not really, getting this close to a person, your sense of smell, taste, touches and others are all working together. And when your brain reacts positively to a first kiss and maybe the other one, your body is flooded with norepinephrine. Your body goes to fight or flight mode. (This explains one night stands that never become two nights). Your heart beats faster, and the norepinephrine creates a sort of narrow tunnel vision to help you focus on the QT infront of you or run away. Now i know why some people dress up quickly after you know what.

This chemical can warp your sense of time and also improve your memory. Haki someone give me a smooch.. I have time to kill..

Have you ever been in love? And… I don’t know how to really ask you this… but, will you share this to someone else?

Thanks for reading.

Offended

Warning this write up contains words that some readers may find defensive if you are affected by any other content in this you please contact literally anyone else but me.

Before i forget i’d like to say that this blog will be a bit different to normal, because it will contain a lot of opinion, but i feel so passionately about this topic that it needs to be addressed.

So if you are sensitive and easily offended kindly give this one a miss. If you have arched the news or read the papers and any social media, in recent years you have noticed a trend of  a group that is offended by everything.

Whether you been a witness to it or not there is an ever growing number of ultra politically correct, far left militants, that are hell bent campaigning for a cause for people who they have never met or even never asked them to complain for them in the first place.

And no this isn’t about politics, it for more seriously than that. This is about maintaining our freedom and rights as human beings. And no, sadly am not exaggerating.

Okay, so what the hell i’m I going on about? Let me tell you about a fairly recent case that just goes to prove my point about how deadly political correctness can be. In November 2009 a psychologist working in the us army , Nidal Malik Hassan, opened fire on the other troops in the base shouting God is great in arabic. 13 people were killed. It was soon discovered that the Pentagon knew all about Hassan’s radical ideologies way before this act of terrorism. They knew about the emails he sent to together radical Muslims. Even his own colleagues at the base had expressed their discomfort about him to to others, saying he was a ticking time bomb.

So how on earth could be US government and the senior army management simply allow this mass murder to take place?

Well because of the powers that be within the US army were too afraid of being accused of racially profiling someone to take any action against him. And so because of the unyielding pressure of political correctness in the modern age, 13 people tragically had to die.

We have a snowflake, overly sensitive millennials who feel entitled to being offended. These keyboard warriors hide behind their cell phones and laptop keyboards, lashing out on everything and everyone who says something they don’t like. They crucify comedians, movies and other TV content that say anything that doesn’t go with your taste of words.

This has inevitably led to a rapid decline in creativity. And now we have to suffer through tasteless comedies and movies.

What is the true problem today? It is millennials who have in their mind the feelings of entitlement, that they believe to censor everyone. This is because, these kids most especially in the west, having grown in a time of no violence, war, of oppression and poverty, they have never known what it’s like to not have everything.

They think being offended means something, well it doesn’t. If you are offended handle it like everyone else used to or does.

Actually well let me tell you straight, being offended doesn’t mean anything it’s a natural human response. It’s ok to be offended or even disgusted. But that doesn’t mean you oppress others because they offended you. If someone calls you stupid, be mad. But doesn’t mean tweet and Facebook against people using the word stupid. That’s actually very… stupid.

And it’s also a little something we like to call OPPRESSION. I’m not talking about every young person out there.  I’m simply talking about a small small minority but as is often the case in life, it’s the few that spoil it for the many.

Just because you are offended by a specific thing, it does not mean that the rest of the world should be. Because we are all unique, and may vary in difference of opinions. We don’t even have the same faiths and beliefs. And if we did have the same beliefs, that doesn’t sound like fun does it?

For example i get offended by people who drink instant coffee, that doesn’t mean I make people drink chocolate. Because that’s not right. I can’t go forcing my opinions down people’s throats.  Should i care everyone out there is offended by different things? I can guarantee that, no matter what you think of, there will be someone out there in the world he finds it offensive. You can never fully police every freedom speech and people behaviours because doing so who be trying to police everyone and everything that they say. This snowflake generation, are trying to police everything. We are humans and we are allowed to be different from each other, both on ideologies and opinions. So you can’t force everyone to be like you.

I don’t know about you, but i would say that attempting to prevent people from thinking of certain way, from saying what they want and stopping them for behaving in a natural and human way is the opposite of freedom of speech.

I hope that, and a desire for free speech to be still well and alive within our society. It’s ok to be offended. But forcing it down our throats is not.

So the next time that someone get offended and complains against you for sitting the wrong way in public, for eating meat, for buying Mtura, for using gender pronoun, for openly supporting your favourite political party, for casually flirting with a stranger or just making a joke that’s not funny to them, for innocently touching another  human being, for openly praying for your chosen deity, for simply earning more money than your peers, or simply because you don’t identify as a non-conforming gender fluid, pansexual cabbage. Do not stand for it, not for a moment.

Because at the end of the day, you are being yourself. And believe me, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If simply being yourself and doing what you know, and what comes natural to you offends someone else, then it’s their problem to deal with. Don’t let them make it yours or anybody else’s.

If you have miraculously read through all that… good job and thanks for your time.

24 SELF DEVELOPMENT TIPS

1. Make friends with successful people and occasionally buy them gifts and surprise them with lunch because successful people always give and hardly get, so when you give them, they value the gift a lot.

2. Get a mentor and follow his instructions and respect the relationship. Never beg your mentor for money or disrespect his or her privacy.

3. Make new positive friends as often as possible and ensure you keep the communication line open. Create a network of friends and not just connections.

5. Show kindness to everyone. Some small boys today will be big boys tomorrow. The biggest dog in the neighbourhood was once a puppy. Keep the information/secret to yourself.

6. Always plan ahead and be proactive. He that plans the future works less in the future.

7. Listen to speeches and messages from great teachers, both religious and educational.

8. Attend seminars and trainings on any area you need to improve yourself – Train the trainer, personal development, public speaking, sales etc.

9. Have the habit of keeping a pen and a writing pad handy because ideas come in the form of flashes. The smallest pen is bigger and better than the biggest brain.

10. Make sure at every point in time you are reading a book. If you spend 20 minutes reading daily, for 52 weeks you would have consumed 1,000,000 words.

11.Stay away from television as much as possible. You can watch educational channels. Men with big TV sit in front of them to watch men with big libraries.

12 Put control over your mouth; never say evil of any man; what you are not certain of should not be said. Say good of all men.

13. Always show appreciation for any good deed you received.

14. Always help someone in need.

15. Live a debt free life. What you can’t pay cash for is not your size.

16. Give out loans that you can part with as gift, so that you don’t destroy your business and relationship.

17. Create legitimate multiple sources of income.

18. Save at least 10 percent of your income.

19. Invest a portion of your income, and be patient to see it grow. If what you have in your hands is not good to be called a harvest then it’s a seed; sow it.

20. Keep a good financial record of all income and expenses, so you won’t ask later “where did my money go”

21. Be involved in community service- Control traffic, free lesson class for students etc.

22. Keep getting better on your daily goals and dream, develop yourself on them and make sure you get to the top 10 % of your industry.

23. Make sure you engage in physical exercise. It keeps your brain alert and your body fit to enjoy your success.

24. Pray often, and know that for every success, God made it possible.

Wishing you the very best in life. Practice what you just read, and see the difference.

May you live a happy and prosperous life. 🙏😃😉

Five Deliberate Reasons you are Still Broke

1. You are Just Lazy:

Let’s face it! Sometimes being broke is purely because of laziness. Yes there are some circumstances that may cause some people to be broke for no fault of their own, granted. But other times is just people deliberately deciding to be lazy. Too much TV, too much sleeping, too much Facebook and you want to make money. There are people who will just not do anything, they will not try… but somehow still expect money. These are the candidates for miracle money. Believe me, if you dedicate to work, and you keep working diligently everyday, in whatever your hands find to do you will find something that pays… It’s a law of work.. “he who does not work shall not eat…” Don’t look for money, look for work… And get me right, I didn’t say “look for a job” I said look for work.

2. You are too Superstitious: I will never understand how broke people are the most superstitious. Eeh. They are so averse to any money making opportunity and they look at every opportunity with an attitude, “what if I lose money?”… My friend, how much do you have to lose… Almost every opportunity your present to them, they are suspicious. And it is not possible to convince them… Especially if they have syndrome number one also… Laziness and superstition? Weapon of Mass destruction. They want risk free money making systems, which unfortunately do not exist… These are the kind of broke people who can write best seller books on “How not to Make Money”…, because thats all they see in every opportunity.

3. You think you Know Enough: Call a business seminar, even a free one, the broke will not come and they will be like “what can they teach us there?” Tag them a long business post, they comment, “didn’t finish reading, too long”.. They wont read books, even free ones. As far as they are concerned, they already know everything and depend on whatever little information they have in their head to make decision. They will engage in arguments & discussions and yet be so proudly arrogant in their ignorance and lack of logic. They find solace in their own empty heads… So even information about how to make money, they don’t listen because they think they have enough data already. They don’t understand, you only earn as much as you learn…

4. You Surround Yourself with Brokeness: Honestly, you stay in a broke neighbourhood, you have broke friends, you go to a broke church, and you have broke discussions… Who bewitched you? As I said, some circumstances are not your own making, yes, like where you stay… But having broke friends, going to broke places, having broke conversation? Those are your choices. You can choose today and say to yourself, “I may be broke, but I will no longer surround myself with broke circumstances”… Life is made in such a way that, through some induction and osmosis, you absorb whatever surrounds you and you soon start identifying with it. If you stay too long in a particular environment, you begin to internalise it and cannot describe yourself independent of your environment. Thats why you need to deliberately distrupt yourself from such environments by reducing how much time you spend surrounded by poverty for instance.

5. You are Financially Indisciplined: It’s funny how most broke people are the ones who don’t understand the power of financial discipline… The chap has been broke for a long time, and then they make a little money… Instead of thinking about how they can invest the money into tomorrow, they want to shine and prove they are not broke by living an extravagant life for the weekend. It’s funny how many broke people will be at the Chisa Nyama every weekend, trying to make a point to people who don’t know them, who don’t even care… And before the weekend ends, they are broke again. People who are not broke understand how to use money to make money… They don’t spend on unnecesary things just to show other broke people that they are not broke.

False Idols

In the bible, Exodus chapter 20 talks about the 10 commandments. The second one talks about false idols. An idol is anything or anyone who is regarded with admiration, adoration or devotion. Now each one of us has that person or thing they adore, admire Almighty? Think about it.

Do you have any false idols? A false idol doesn’t have to be a person. The first false idol was a calf made of gold, well it doesn’t sass me up, but who knows maybe it was a cute calf and the guy who made it had a miracle hand. Maybe false idols are anything that stops you from thinking about God, or anything that you admire or are devoted to it than your faith.

Take for example our gadgets, like phones. We rarely talk to anyone when we are with them. I admit, I also suffer from this problem. Our phones lead us astray most of the time. Some of us are in church but busy reading Kilimani Mums and Dads stories on a Sunday morning. We wake up to our phones before we say our prayers. We actual touch our phones before we touch our spouses. Some people sleep with their phones under their pillows. It is the last thing they check and the first thing they do in the morning.

Our phones have made pastors, bishops, and even politicians get in trouble. Don’t laugh at them, look at you. How many groups are you in on Facebook and WhatsApp? And most of them are not religion groups. Unlike my Paramedics group that we get our daily dose of the word of God and we never complain. Our brother, keep doing God’s work in that group. Heaven is waiting for you and maybe some of us

What if God asked you to give up your phone? You know he once asked Abraham to sacrifice his son; He actually sacrificed his own son about 2000 years ago. So it’s not crazy for me to think this, He can ask anything. So what would life be? You would need your watch, calculator, map, actual bible, dictionary, library, camera and many other things including a Walkman. I know some of you don’t even know what those are. Well those are some of the things your phone replaced including a calendar and a diary.

As much as we worship our tiny screen altars, we need them to run our day to day life. But don’t you be so much into your phone that you let life pass you by. Don’t lose your spouse or loved one over a piece of technology. And if God asks you to get rid of it, I will pray for you. Thank you for reading.

The journey

The only part they told us about entrepreneurship was that we would be our own bosses.

They never told us that we would fail many times before we succeed.
They never told us that we would work 5 times more than our employees and not get anything sometimes.
They never told us that this would cripple our credit score. That we will be in debt and owe alot of people money.
No one said anything about the sleepless nights trying to figure out a way forward.
No one told us about the stress and anxiety.

No one told us that this will cause conflict between us and or relatives and family members.
No one told us that we would be jokes to the society especially when we start changing from one business to another.

No one told us that sometimes we will go six months without any income. Living in the edge and surviving through borrowing money from different people.

No one told us that our doors would be shut down due failure to pay staff, they can’t get to work.

No one told us we would be hobos at some point.
No one told us that our wife’s and girlfriend’s would leave us because they will not understand our journey.

No one told us that we will have to be more than patient.
That we would make so many mistakes end up losing alot of money.
That we would have to risk our lives in order to move forward.

We had to figure this out all by ourselves.
Many gave up on the journey.
Some died on the journey.

But some of us after going through so much pain we decided that we were going to succeed or die trying .
Some of us we are never giving up on this no matter what. We are now doing it and very aware of the circumstances.
It’s win or nothing for us and it’s too late to go back now.

We are entrepreneurs!!

7 Life Lessons

  1. You Attract Success
“Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you
    become.”
So few people realize this. Success is not something that you chase,
it’s something that you turn into. Success comes from growth; it
comes from growing bigger than the problems and obstacles that
    surround you.
Don’t search for success – commit to grow, commit to become,
commit to do what you know to do, and you will attract success.

    2. You Must Change

“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”
If you want change, you must change! You must work harder on
yourself than you work on anything else. The greatest investment
you will ever make is in yourself. Don’t invest in the stock market,
if you haven’t first invested in yourself. Labor to become a better
person; everyday you want to be slightly better than you were the
day before.

3. Never Give Up

“How long should you try? Until.”
Never give up. If you just keep at it, eventually you will reach the
top. It probably won’t happen in a year, but just imagine what
could be achieved if you stayed focused for 20 or 30 years, or
longer. When I say never give up, I don’t mean to imply that you
should wait around for something to happen; what I’m saying is
that you should make something happen.
Success is not that complicated. I like what Jim said, “Success is
neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence
of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.”

  1. Atmosphere is Critical

“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I
around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me
reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me
going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what
do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is
that okay? Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by
change.”
Who are you talking to? Who are you listening to? What seeds are
being planted into your life? Atmosphere is critical! In order for
your life to produce fruit, it must be planted in the right
atmosphere. You wouldn’t try to plant tomato seeds in the desert
because it’s not the right atmosphere for a tomato seed to produce.
Likewise, don’t try to become successful surrounded by negative
people. Create an atmosphere where you can flourish. Learn to
guard what you hear; guard what gets planted in your thoughts, so
you can become all that you were destined to become.

  1. Steady Progress

“Success is steady progress toward one’s personal goals”
My mother use to say, “Slowly but surely.” That’s exactly how your
dreams come to pass when you commit to achieve them. Nothing
happens overnight, look at anyone who’s successful. It’s taken
them years to get there, sometimes decades, don’t think you are
any different. If it took them years, don’t be surprised when it
takes you years. In other words, manage your expectations, so you
don’t get disappointed unnecessarily. Success is possible, but it
won’t happen tomorrow, if you just began today.
Remember, success is not a single event; you don’t become a
success in a moment. Success comes from moving in the right
direction every day.

  1. Set Your Sail

“It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines
which way we will go.” Jim rohn
Set your sail, or set your mind on what you want to accomplish.
It’s not the circumstances of life that determine where you end up,
it’s your commitment to arrive at your intended destination that
determines your success.

  1. Learn to See the Value of Time

“Time is more valuable than money. You can always get more money,
but you cannot ever get more time.”
There is nothing more valuable than time. You can sow your time
and get anything you want. You can sow your time and get more
friends, more money, or better health. Nothing is more priceless
than time, so never waste this precious gift. I’ve never met a rich
man who didn’t value his time, and I’ve never met a poor man who
did.
Learn to see the value of time because with time, anything can be
accomplished!

Millenials

According to YouTube analytics roughly 80% of people watching it are under 35 years old. Marketers have invented a name for this demographic of impressionable young people they’re called millennials, others have labeled them generation Y. A millennial is anyone born after 1980, that includes myself and most of my readers. In fact millennials now outnumber every other generation.

but according to multiple studies, we are the most depressed generation ever. Psychology today reports that the suicide rate amongst young adults has tripled since the 1950s and terrifyingly suicide is now the second most common cause of death among college students. Between 2005 and 2014 the number of clinically depressed teenagers increased by more than half a million, three-quarters of whom were women every year more and more millennials are taking time off work and seeking help for mental health issues an even greater number of report extremely low job satisfaction and say that they experience difficulty maintaining relationships.

Young people always get a lot of stick, the older generation have always experienced ‘juvenoia’, a fear or hostility directed at the younger generation. This is nothing new baby boomers born just after the war had a strong work ethic, and believed that the amount of hours worked directly relational to their income. Baby boomers heavily begrudged the generation that came after them, Generation X. They were more independent they changed their careers more often and believed in a fair work life/balance. And now it has come full circle once again baby boomers and generation xers alike are resenting generation Y the millennials. Who have brand new values such as collaboration, work that actually meaningful and impactful, for having fun in the workplace and ofcourse free FOOD…

Do previous generation look down on upon us just because we’re different or is it more than that? Even time magazine has poked the millennial beast calling them “lazy, entitled narcissist” who still live with their parents. But unfortunately they could have a point, unike the generational divides of last century, there is a lot of research and statistics that suggest every bad label millennials have been tied with, maybe well deserved even if it isn’t strictly through our own fault. The cold hard facts don’t lie. The volume of incidents of narcissistic personality disorder is three times higher for people currently in their 20s than the average.

Are we really all in love with ourselves because we received 50 likes on our latest selfie? Experts believe there are very real, observable causes of this heightened narcissism. Millennials are the first generation that has been brought up on reality television and every year more than most superficial reality programming is shoved down our throats. Such programs advertise narcissism above all else, portraying looks and popularity as the source of fame and happiness. In such shows real human relationships are often shown as being cheap and disposable. And then of course there’s a social media swamp that drowns us all in a sea of likes, shares pins and follows.

Countless studies have shown that dopamine the pleasure chemical is released in the brain when we receive likes on our photos and videos. This system breeds narcissism at its very core. It appears that the more narcissistic we are and the most selfies we upload the more likes we will inevitably receive and sadly this actually makes us happy.

Experts also accuse us of being entitled. A recent study 40% of millennial believe they should be promoted every two years even if they have not earned it. Research shows that this entitlement to be given handouts, regardless of one’s performance, stems from an unusual place. Remember school sports day? Even if you came in last place you still got a trophy just for participating. As children we were always rewarded for taking part somehow, its the taking part that counts remember?  Countless studies have proven that this attitude created disingenuous and diluted sense of achievement and can be deeply damaging to our future expectations of what it really takes to achieve something.

This philosophy is unique to our generation, generation X-ers, baby boomers and those  before them were all brought up in a deeply competitive environment. It was instilled within them from a young age that rewards have to be earned through hard work and graft. They were not told that they were entitled to anything.

The so-called silent generation that lived through both world wars certainly didn’t feel entitled, they lived through the hardest times of modern history and everything they had earned, they had to cling onto with their lives quite literally. This meant that when they brought up their children, the baby boomers, they instilled within them a strict mentality of saving every penny and an extremely hard work ethic. They were told that nothing in life was for free or even expected. it was all up to them.

The baby boomers grew up and had children of their own generation x, thus they passed on the same hard work ethic. But then a huge shift happened in the global economy that changed everything. Generation x lived through a time of great prosperity, industry was on the rise and the world was finally dragging itself out of the pits that it had dug for itself during the war. This gen xers can do attitude made them and so they taught their children, us millennials that if you put your mind to it you can do anything and live a very successful happy life. Their parents have drilled in their head that You are special and unique, this has created the generation of people who believe that they are special. Millenials are fame obsessed too. In recent survey, millenials are four times likely to work as an assistant of a famous person than be a CEO of a major corporation. In a recent poll, teens were asked what they would like to do for a career 54% of 16 year olds answered, “become a celebrity”. Far gone are the days when becoming a celebrity was just a side effect of demonstrating unique talents to the masses.

Millennials are also lazier we have grown up with technology that can think for us and therein lies the biggest problem that’s ruining the lives of young people today, mobile phones. I know you’ve heard it 100 times mobile phones are bad for you, but do you really know just how damaging they are from mental health? Because the researcher is terrifying. So just imagine you’re enjoying a meal at a restaurant with family or friends how many times do you check your phone? Over the course of that, the average millennial checks their phone over 100 times per day and they touch, tap, swipe on their phone over 3000 times per day. Because we are all addicts. I mentioned earlier that receiving likes release dopamine, well so does 100 other things we do with our phones.

Taking a selfie, a picture of food or even writing status update that you just cooked the most amazing omelette of your life. All these acts release dopamine even before we upload them to the internet. The anticipation of multitude of likes and comments makes our brain go bonkers with dopamine. Within seconds we start to receive feedback, this instant gratification, instant approval from our peers. And it goes on and on round-the-clock we receive instant gratification when we wake up, peer approval before we go to bed and throughout the middle of the night the dopamine swirls and swirls in our brain and its everlasting continuum of self fulfillment and reward.

This only serves to perpetuate or narcissism. Until it stops. When we upload a photo of chapo, avocado and toast mayai  (Kobi Challenge nayo) and it doesn’t receive as much attention as we hoped. In our minds our peers have rejected us, we are now lost without purpose we are now depressed. Does all this sound familiar? This cycle of massive releases of dopamine followed by periods of intense sadness sounds very much like an alcohol or gambling addiction, doesn’t it? Whether we like it or not, we have become a generation ofaddicts. We are so addicted that our phones sleep next to us, stay next to our food as we eat and the reason we have our loved ones in second priority to a little dopamine device it’s the reason we don’t talk to people on the bus, matatu (yes Kenya we have those), on the train, at school or work, we instead indulge wholly in our addiction because we are truly addicted and most of us don’t even realize.

A survey of more than 2000 millenials found that 93% use their phones in bed and 80% use their phones on the toilet. But its not your fault, Millennials are simply a product of the environment, this is the hands we were dealt, we grew up in a time of rapid technological advancement and as long as mobile devices continue to generate enormous profits then companies will continue to develop new digital mechanisms and social networks that provide us with instant gratification and it keeps coming quicker and quicker we no longer have to wait for our next fix. Its instantaneous we have snapchat, facebook, instagram, twitter, pinterest, whatsapp any of which can provide on next fix whenever we desire it.

Our parents didn’t have these distractions. They had to put work and effort into receiving the approval of their peers. They had to have meaningful conversations and form strong deep and long lasting relationships with both their friends and partners. At work they had to graft day after day, and when the promotion came along my god did they deserve it. In contrast millennials have become immensely inpatient we are so used to instant gratification that if we don’t get a promotion 10 minutes after we start a new job we get bored of it because its not in the timeline we are used to. We say we want to make impact, yet we expect do so within our first six months at a new job.

And when 6 months or year has gone by and we’re still the tea and coffee guy for the office it makes us feel disenfranchised, worthless and depressed. But it’s not your fault you have grown up in a maelstrom of dopamine on tap when ever you desire it, so naturally you expect the same instant fulfillment from your career and relationships. We can’t tap a button to help us achieve that, there is no virtual replacement for hard work and genuine conversations. We can’t swipe right to get promoted and I’m sorry folks but it’s going to take more than commenting on your partner’s latest selfie to make them feel genuinely valued and loved. Take them on a date, forget your phone for the entire time. Because the moment you do they are now priority.

So should we be worried about the future of a world run by these terrible millenials? in 10 or 20 years time? These narcissistic, self-obsessed, lazy, entitled young adults who want success handed to them on a plate? Who can’t tie down a relationship or achieve satisfaction in the workplace, because the’re too addicted to social media.

Well, yes we young people have our issues but we’re actually no different to the last generation. Also labelled as entitled and lazy when they were young. We need to recognize that the world has completely changed both technologically and culturally over the past twenty years, and millennials are the first of adopters of this strange new lifestyle. When you can build a billion dollar business from your bedroom if you put your mind to it. All our apparent faults are clearly symptoms of trying to adapt to a completely strange new way of life, that are parents didn’t have to deal with.

We face new pressures and stresses and challenges, and we need to find better ways to cope with them rather than indulging in social media. And for all of us there are actually good things to say about us millenials that are rarely brought up.  We are the most tolerable generation ever. Research shows that prejudice has fallen with each generation. Millenials are less racist, homophobic and sexiest than their parents. a Pew research asked adults aged between 18 and 29, what their most important priority was during their lifetime, 52% said good parent, 30% said have a successful marriage and 21% replied helping others.

Now that doesn’t sound like a generation that is completely self absorbed, Does it? And  in our inability to hold a normal 9-5 job, may not be entirely due to our reliance on social media.

Maybe its because we want more than the monotonous normality of working for some heartless giant corporation like suffericom who drink our bundles like juice. Research shows that millennials are the most entrepreneur generation ever. Spurred on by young do-it-yourself success stories like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg as its innovation we have an unstoppable appetite to achieve something big and make an impact, right after we are finished sending is hilarious snapchat.

This mentality might be proving difficult to some large corporations who need to employ cheap, young labour that can sit in an office and push buttons for 8 hours a day. But it’s certainly is changing the world in ways our parents could have never imagine. There’s no doubt that we need to spend more time interacting with one another and less time on social media. All the research has shown that it does bad things for mental health. But we need to accept that the world is rapidly changing. Millenials have their faults but they are changing the world in incredible ways just like the generation before us and the generation before that. Change has always come and always will, it is inevitable. So we need to find a way to work with it for the better instead of spending our time pointing out the faults in others.

  1. Determine your goals.
What do you want to get out of your social Web participation? Why are you doing it? Are you trying to generate direct sales? Are you trying to offer a form of customer service? Do you want to build relationships with customers and boost loyalty? Your answers to these questions greatly affect the type of content you publish and the activities you participate in on the social Web.

    2. Evaluate your resources.
Who is going to create your content? Who is going to maintain your social media accounts? Who is going to respond to questions and be the face of your business online? Do you have the technical ability in-house to join the online conversation? If not, are you willing to learn? Can you or someone who works with you write well? You need to be sure you have the necessary people in place to execute a social media marketing plan before you start.

    3. Know your audience.
Where does your target audience spend time online? What kind of content and conversations do the audience members get most vocal about? What kind of information do they want from you? What do they dislike? Remember, you’re not just publishing marketing messages on the social Web. You need to find out what your audience wants and needs, so you can provide the kind of content they find useful and interesting. However, you also need to be personable, so they actually want to interact with you.

    4. Create amazing content.
Once you know where your audience spends time and what kind of content audience members want, take the time to give them more of that kind of content. Don’t give up. You need to continually offer your audience amazing content, which also comes in the form of conversations, in order to build a loyal fol¬lowing of people who trust you as a source that can meet their needs and expectations.

    5. Integrate your marketing efforts.
All of your efforts at social media marketing should feed off each other. Cross-promote your efforts both online and offline, and make sure your social media and traditional marketing efforts work together seamlessly.

    6. Create a schedule.
Allocate specific times during your day to devote to social media marketing. For example, spend five minutes on Twitter before you check your e-mail each day and another five minutes before you leave work each day. When you create a schedule, it’s easier to stick to it and make sure you don’t skip your social media marketing activities each day.

    7. Adopt an 80-20 rule.
Always spend at least 80 percent of your time on social media activities that are not self-promotional and no more than 20 percent of your time on self-promotional activities.

    8. Focus on quality, not quantity.
It can be easy to get caught up in the numbers, but don’t become a slave to followers and subscribers. It’s better to have 1,000 highly engaged, loyal followers than 10,000 followers who sign up to follow you but then never acknowledge you again.

    9. Give up control.
You must let your audience take control of the online conversation and make it their own so they develop an emotional attachment to you, your brand, and your business. Remember, on the social Web, apathy or invisibility is a bigger problem than negativity.

    10. Keep learning.
You can never stop listening and learning. For success in social media marketing, you need to be flexible and accept that change is good
