7 Life Lessons

  1. You Attract Success
“Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you
    become.”
So few people realize this. Success is not something that you chase,
it’s something that you turn into. Success comes from growth; it
comes from growing bigger than the problems and obstacles that
    surround you.
Don’t search for success – commit to grow, commit to become,
commit to do what you know to do, and you will attract success.

    2. You Must Change

“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”
If you want change, you must change! You must work harder on
yourself than you work on anything else. The greatest investment
you will ever make is in yourself. Don’t invest in the stock market,
if you haven’t first invested in yourself. Labor to become a better
person; everyday you want to be slightly better than you were the
day before.

3. Never Give Up

“How long should you try? Until.”
Never give up. If you just keep at it, eventually you will reach the
top. It probably won’t happen in a year, but just imagine what
could be achieved if you stayed focused for 20 or 30 years, or
longer. When I say never give up, I don’t mean to imply that you
should wait around for something to happen; what I’m saying is
that you should make something happen.
Success is not that complicated. I like what Jim said, “Success is
neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence
of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.”

  1. Atmosphere is Critical

“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I
around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me
reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me
going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what
do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is
that okay? Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by
change.”
Who are you talking to? Who are you listening to? What seeds are
being planted into your life? Atmosphere is critical! In order for
your life to produce fruit, it must be planted in the right
atmosphere. You wouldn’t try to plant tomato seeds in the desert
because it’s not the right atmosphere for a tomato seed to produce.
Likewise, don’t try to become successful surrounded by negative
people. Create an atmosphere where you can flourish. Learn to
guard what you hear; guard what gets planted in your thoughts, so
you can become all that you were destined to become.

  1. Steady Progress

“Success is steady progress toward one’s personal goals”
My mother use to say, “Slowly but surely.” That’s exactly how your
dreams come to pass when you commit to achieve them. Nothing
happens overnight, look at anyone who’s successful. It’s taken
them years to get there, sometimes decades, don’t think you are
any different. If it took them years, don’t be surprised when it
takes you years. In other words, manage your expectations, so you
don’t get disappointed unnecessarily. Success is possible, but it
won’t happen tomorrow, if you just began today.
Remember, success is not a single event; you don’t become a
success in a moment. Success comes from moving in the right
direction every day.

  1. Set Your Sail

“It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines
which way we will go.” Jim rohn
Set your sail, or set your mind on what you want to accomplish.
It’s not the circumstances of life that determine where you end up,
it’s your commitment to arrive at your intended destination that
determines your success.

  1. Learn to See the Value of Time

“Time is more valuable than money. You can always get more money,
but you cannot ever get more time.”
There is nothing more valuable than time. You can sow your time
and get anything you want. You can sow your time and get more
friends, more money, or better health. Nothing is more priceless
than time, so never waste this precious gift. I’ve never met a rich
man who didn’t value his time, and I’ve never met a poor man who
did.
Learn to see the value of time because with time, anything can be
accomplished!

Millenials

According to YouTube analytics roughly 80% of people watching it are under 35 years old. Marketers have invented a name for this demographic of impressionable young people they’re called millennials, others have labeled them generation Y. A millennial is anyone born after 1980, that includes myself and most of my readers. In fact millennials now outnumber every other generation.

but according to multiple studies, we are the most depressed generation ever. Psychology today reports that the suicide rate amongst young adults has tripled since the 1950s and terrifyingly suicide is now the second most common cause of death among college students. Between 2005 and 2014 the number of clinically depressed teenagers increased by more than half a million, three-quarters of whom were women every year more and more millennials are taking time off work and seeking help for mental health issues an even greater number of report extremely low job satisfaction and say that they experience difficulty maintaining relationships.

Young people always get a lot of stick, the older generation have always experienced ‘juvenoia’, a fear or hostility directed at the younger generation. This is nothing new baby boomers born just after the war had a strong work ethic, and believed that the amount of hours worked directly relational to their income. Baby boomers heavily begrudged the generation that came after them, Generation X. They were more independent they changed their careers more often and believed in a fair work life/balance. And now it has come full circle once again baby boomers and generation xers alike are resenting generation Y the millennials. Who have brand new values such as collaboration, work that actually meaningful and impactful, for having fun in the workplace and ofcourse free FOOD…

Do previous generation look down on upon us just because we’re different or is it more than that? Even time magazine has poked the millennial beast calling them “lazy, entitled narcissist” who still live with their parents. But unfortunately they could have a point, unike the generational divides of last century, there is a lot of research and statistics that suggest every bad label millennials have been tied with, maybe well deserved even if it isn’t strictly through our own fault. The cold hard facts don’t lie. The volume of incidents of narcissistic personality disorder is three times higher for people currently in their 20s than the average.

Are we really all in love with ourselves because we received 50 likes on our latest selfie? Experts believe there are very real, observable causes of this heightened narcissism. Millennials are the first generation that has been brought up on reality television and every year more than most superficial reality programming is shoved down our throats. Such programs advertise narcissism above all else, portraying looks and popularity as the source of fame and happiness. In such shows real human relationships are often shown as being cheap and disposable. And then of course there’s a social media swamp that drowns us all in a sea of likes, shares pins and follows.

Countless studies have shown that dopamine the pleasure chemical is released in the brain when we receive likes on our photos and videos. This system breeds narcissism at its very core. It appears that the more narcissistic we are and the most selfies we upload the more likes we will inevitably receive and sadly this actually makes us happy.

Experts also accuse us of being entitled. A recent study 40% of millennial believe they should be promoted every two years even if they have not earned it. Research shows that this entitlement to be given handouts, regardless of one’s performance, stems from an unusual place. Remember school sports day? Even if you came in last place you still got a trophy just for participating. As children we were always rewarded for taking part somehow, its the taking part that counts remember?  Countless studies have proven that this attitude created disingenuous and diluted sense of achievement and can be deeply damaging to our future expectations of what it really takes to achieve something.

This philosophy is unique to our generation, generation X-ers, baby boomers and those  before them were all brought up in a deeply competitive environment. It was instilled within them from a young age that rewards have to be earned through hard work and graft. They were not told that they were entitled to anything.

The so-called silent generation that lived through both world wars certainly didn’t feel entitled, they lived through the hardest times of modern history and everything they had earned, they had to cling onto with their lives quite literally. This meant that when they brought up their children, the baby boomers, they instilled within them a strict mentality of saving every penny and an extremely hard work ethic. They were told that nothing in life was for free or even expected. it was all up to them.

The baby boomers grew up and had children of their own generation x, thus they passed on the same hard work ethic. But then a huge shift happened in the global economy that changed everything. Generation x lived through a time of great prosperity, industry was on the rise and the world was finally dragging itself out of the pits that it had dug for itself during the war. This gen xers can do attitude made them and so they taught their children, us millennials that if you put your mind to it you can do anything and live a very successful happy life. Their parents have drilled in their head that You are special and unique, this has created the generation of people who believe that they are special. Millenials are fame obsessed too. In recent survey, millenials are four times likely to work as an assistant of a famous person than be a CEO of a major corporation. In a recent poll, teens were asked what they would like to do for a career 54% of 16 year olds answered, “become a celebrity”. Far gone are the days when becoming a celebrity was just a side effect of demonstrating unique talents to the masses.

Millennials are also lazier we have grown up with technology that can think for us and therein lies the biggest problem that’s ruining the lives of young people today, mobile phones. I know you’ve heard it 100 times mobile phones are bad for you, but do you really know just how damaging they are from mental health? Because the researcher is terrifying. So just imagine you’re enjoying a meal at a restaurant with family or friends how many times do you check your phone? Over the course of that, the average millennial checks their phone over 100 times per day and they touch, tap, swipe on their phone over 3000 times per day. Because we are all addicts. I mentioned earlier that receiving likes release dopamine, well so does 100 other things we do with our phones.

Taking a selfie, a picture of food or even writing status update that you just cooked the most amazing omelette of your life. All these acts release dopamine even before we upload them to the internet. The anticipation of multitude of likes and comments makes our brain go bonkers with dopamine. Within seconds we start to receive feedback, this instant gratification, instant approval from our peers. And it goes on and on round-the-clock we receive instant gratification when we wake up, peer approval before we go to bed and throughout the middle of the night the dopamine swirls and swirls in our brain and its everlasting continuum of self fulfillment and reward.

This only serves to perpetuate or narcissism. Until it stops. When we upload a photo of chapo, avocado and toast mayai  (Kobi Challenge nayo) and it doesn’t receive as much attention as we hoped. In our minds our peers have rejected us, we are now lost without purpose we are now depressed. Does all this sound familiar? This cycle of massive releases of dopamine followed by periods of intense sadness sounds very much like an alcohol or gambling addiction, doesn’t it? Whether we like it or not, we have become a generation ofaddicts. We are so addicted that our phones sleep next to us, stay next to our food as we eat and the reason we have our loved ones in second priority to a little dopamine device it’s the reason we don’t talk to people on the bus, matatu (yes Kenya we have those), on the train, at school or work, we instead indulge wholly in our addiction because we are truly addicted and most of us don’t even realize.

A survey of more than 2000 millenials found that 93% use their phones in bed and 80% use their phones on the toilet. But its not your fault, Millennials are simply a product of the environment, this is the hands we were dealt, we grew up in a time of rapid technological advancement and as long as mobile devices continue to generate enormous profits then companies will continue to develop new digital mechanisms and social networks that provide us with instant gratification and it keeps coming quicker and quicker we no longer have to wait for our next fix. Its instantaneous we have snapchat, facebook, instagram, twitter, pinterest, whatsapp any of which can provide on next fix whenever we desire it.

Our parents didn’t have these distractions. They had to put work and effort into receiving the approval of their peers. They had to have meaningful conversations and form strong deep and long lasting relationships with both their friends and partners. At work they had to graft day after day, and when the promotion came along my god did they deserve it. In contrast millennials have become immensely inpatient we are so used to instant gratification that if we don’t get a promotion 10 minutes after we start a new job we get bored of it because its not in the timeline we are used to. We say we want to make impact, yet we expect do so within our first six months at a new job.

And when 6 months or year has gone by and we’re still the tea and coffee guy for the office it makes us feel disenfranchised, worthless and depressed. But it’s not your fault you have grown up in a maelstrom of dopamine on tap when ever you desire it, so naturally you expect the same instant fulfillment from your career and relationships. We can’t tap a button to help us achieve that, there is no virtual replacement for hard work and genuine conversations. We can’t swipe right to get promoted and I’m sorry folks but it’s going to take more than commenting on your partner’s latest selfie to make them feel genuinely valued and loved. Take them on a date, forget your phone for the entire time. Because the moment you do they are now priority.

So should we be worried about the future of a world run by these terrible millenials? in 10 or 20 years time? These narcissistic, self-obsessed, lazy, entitled young adults who want success handed to them on a plate? Who can’t tie down a relationship or achieve satisfaction in the workplace, because the’re too addicted to social media.

Well, yes we young people have our issues but we’re actually no different to the last generation. Also labelled as entitled and lazy when they were young. We need to recognize that the world has completely changed both technologically and culturally over the past twenty years, and millennials are the first of adopters of this strange new lifestyle. When you can build a billion dollar business from your bedroom if you put your mind to it. All our apparent faults are clearly symptoms of trying to adapt to a completely strange new way of life, that are parents didn’t have to deal with.

We face new pressures and stresses and challenges, and we need to find better ways to cope with them rather than indulging in social media. And for all of us there are actually good things to say about us millenials that are rarely brought up.  We are the most tolerable generation ever. Research shows that prejudice has fallen with each generation. Millenials are less racist, homophobic and sexiest than their parents. a Pew research asked adults aged between 18 and 29, what their most important priority was during their lifetime, 52% said good parent, 30% said have a successful marriage and 21% replied helping others.

Now that doesn’t sound like a generation that is completely self absorbed, Does it? And  in our inability to hold a normal 9-5 job, may not be entirely due to our reliance on social media.

Maybe its because we want more than the monotonous normality of working for some heartless giant corporation like suffericom who drink our bundles like juice. Research shows that millennials are the most entrepreneur generation ever. Spurred on by young do-it-yourself success stories like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg as its innovation we have an unstoppable appetite to achieve something big and make an impact, right after we are finished sending is hilarious snapchat.

This mentality might be proving difficult to some large corporations who need to employ cheap, young labour that can sit in an office and push buttons for 8 hours a day. But it’s certainly is changing the world in ways our parents could have never imagine. There’s no doubt that we need to spend more time interacting with one another and less time on social media. All the research has shown that it does bad things for mental health. But we need to accept that the world is rapidly changing. Millenials have their faults but they are changing the world in incredible ways just like the generation before us and the generation before that. Change has always come and always will, it is inevitable. So we need to find a way to work with it for the better instead of spending our time pointing out the faults in others.

Social media marketing

  1. Determine your goals.
What do you want to get out of your social Web participation? Why are you doing it? Are you trying to generate direct sales? Are you trying to offer a form of customer service? Do you want to build relationships with customers and boost loyalty? Your answers to these questions greatly affect the type of content you publish and the activities you participate in on the social Web.

    2. Evaluate your resources.
Who is going to create your content? Who is going to maintain your social media accounts? Who is going to respond to questions and be the face of your business online? Do you have the technical ability in-house to join the online conversation? If not, are you willing to learn? Can you or someone who works with you write well? You need to be sure you have the necessary people in place to execute a social media marketing plan before you start.

    3. Know your audience.
Where does your target audience spend time online? What kind of content and conversations do the audience members get most vocal about? What kind of information do they want from you? What do they dislike? Remember, you’re not just publishing marketing messages on the social Web. You need to find out what your audience wants and needs, so you can provide the kind of content they find useful and interesting. However, you also need to be personable, so they actually want to interact with you.

    4. Create amazing content.
Once you know where your audience spends time and what kind of content audience members want, take the time to give them more of that kind of content. Don’t give up. You need to continually offer your audience amazing content, which also comes in the form of conversations, in order to build a loyal fol¬lowing of people who trust you as a source that can meet their needs and expectations.

    5. Integrate your marketing efforts.
All of your efforts at social media marketing should feed off each other. Cross-promote your efforts both online and offline, and make sure your social media and traditional marketing efforts work together seamlessly.

    6. Create a schedule.
Allocate specific times during your day to devote to social media marketing. For example, spend five minutes on Twitter before you check your e-mail each day and another five minutes before you leave work each day. When you create a schedule, it’s easier to stick to it and make sure you don’t skip your social media marketing activities each day.

    7. Adopt an 80-20 rule.
Always spend at least 80 percent of your time on social media activities that are not self-promotional and no more than 20 percent of your time on self-promotional activities.

    8. Focus on quality, not quantity.
It can be easy to get caught up in the numbers, but don’t become a slave to followers and subscribers. It’s better to have 1,000 highly engaged, loyal followers than 10,000 followers who sign up to follow you but then never acknowledge you again.

    9. Give up control.
You must let your audience take control of the online conversation and make it their own so they develop an emotional attachment to you, your brand, and your business. Remember, on the social Web, apathy or invisibility is a bigger problem than negativity.

    10. Keep learning.
You can never stop listening and learning. For success in social media marketing, you need to be flexible and accept that change is good

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE

To Take Charge of Your life, Be Intentional about Influence
To take charge of your life, you must be Intentional about Leadership . Influence is to persuade somebody to buy a product, consider a service, believe a way of life, buy into an idea, a company, an enterprise, or just to a better life.
We all have the chance and the opportunity to influence somebody else’s thinking, their future, or their life. The key is to develop the skills to do it. You can influence people casually, haphazardly, or intentionally. The key to
influence people on purpose is to learn the skills of how to do it.

To Take Charge of Your life, Be Sincere
To take charge of your life, you must be sincere. To accomplish something, you have to be sincere. “Sincerity is not a test of truth. Don’t make a mistake of saying “he must be right because he’s so sincere; the reason is that it’s possible to be sincerely wrong.
You have to decide for yourself what is truth. You have to learn to “weigh sincerity on sincerity scale and weigh truth on truth scale.” Don’t weigh truth on sincerity scale.

To Take Charge of Your life, Search for New Ideas
To take charge of your life, you must search for new ideas. Ideas are not that far away. “Everything you need is within reach.” The ideas you need to change your life or your business is within reading reach, it’s within listening reach.
There is a probably a library not too far from most people but the problem is “most people drive by the library, few people stop by.” For example, KENYA libraries are free but very few go to read there. The key is not that it’s within reach; the key is who is going to reach.
There is a simple Bible phrase that says “if you search, you will find.” It’s very important to know that “finding is reserved for the searchers.” “You don’t find what you need; you find what you search for.”
Neediness is not the prerequisite for getting value.” “You can’t be a needer; you have to be a searcher.” But if you search, if you try, if you go, if you listen, ideas are within reach. “There is nothing so powerful as an idea who time has come.”
A business idea, social idea, investment idea, good health idea, social idea, all you need is a refinement of an idea to make an impact in your life.

To Take Charge of Your life, Go some extra miles
To take charge of your life, you must be willing to go some extra miles. It doesn’t take much to make a significant difference as life passes. A small difference in a change of discipline, or a change of thinking, can start you on journey to happiness, instead of regrets.
It’s very important to know if you are headed towards happiness or regrets 10 years from now . The key is to start right now to make the little changes to walk this new road. Just a few daily disciplines make a great deal of difference in one year, three years, five years, ten years from now.
“ Ten years from now, you will surely arrive, the question is where?”

You are doing enough things (say 10%) to have arrived at where you are today. You might think you need to do about 90% to make the difference for your life. Maybe all you need is that extra 5-10% of intellectual change, activity change, a refinement of disciple or a refinement of thought. Just a few changes in your reading discipline, few disciplines of the mind, few disciplines of activity.
All you need is the ideas to make these simple changes and the equity starts gathering. “Now is the time to fix the next 10 years .” For example, are you reading the book that will take you where you want to go in the next 10 years ?

Reflections to become The Best Version of Yourself

This is a collection of phrases that keep me focussed on what is important.

There are seven categories:

Dealing with People
Take Disciplined Action
Accept Reality as it is
Make Progress towards Results
Stay Healthy
Living with Purpose and
Personal Growth.

Dealing with People

You will not change them. Let it go.
Who will cry at your funeral?
Never miss a moment to encourage someone.
You will become who you spend most time with.
Communication is measured by what is understood, not how well it is articulated.
It takes two to fight.
Confrontation may be necessary.
Other people can handle more than you think. Be careful with white lies.
Real listening is hard. It requires 100% attention.
There is no such thing as a “self-made man”. Be grateful.
Ask more questions.
The one asking the questions is in control. Are you asking the questions?
Remain curious. The 4th “why?” often gets the real reason.
Learn to attract and use mentors and advisors.
Build networks before you need them.
Get really, really good at concisely presenting your ideas.
Learn to sell.
Aggression begets aggression.
Surround yourself with people strong enough to change your mind.
If you don’t “do politics” others will “do you”.
Learn to differentiate sceptics (good for you) from cynics (bad for you).
In the end people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.
Build lifelong friendships.
Be kind to your mum.
Spend time with people who want you to succeed. Some “friends” don’t want you to grow or change.
Nobody will ever tell you that you made them laugh too much.
What is your label?

Take Disciplined Action

Change is painful. Growth requires change. No pain, no gain.

Everyday changes less. Change that.
Incremental change always wins.

Perfect is the enemy of good. Good is the enemy of great.

The best indicator of mastery of big things is mastery of small things. Master the small things.

Do not wish it were easier. Wish you were better.
Get a coach.

Learn to ask for advice and help.

In the Olympics, nobody wins both marathon and 100m sprints. Focus.

Routine sets you free.

Get good at motivating yourself.

Knowing what to do and not doing it is the same as not knowing what to do.

The most dangerous place is in your safety zone.

“I will try” is never enough. Remove “try”.

If you want to be a writer: write; A singer: sing; A teacher: teach.

Kindness and hard work will take you further than intelligence.

If you never act, you will never know for sure.

Delayed gratification is necessary.

We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret

Accept Reality as it is

If a problem has no solution, it is not a problem. It is a fact.

Bad things do sometimes happen to good people.
Perfectionism messes you up.

Make allowances for incompetence.

Pain is guaranteed. Suffering is optional.

Very, very little is truly under your control.

The past is gone except in your head. Learn to forget.

Ignore the little things.

No one cares about it as you do.

Stop any negative comments about people not in the room. You are not helping them and are likely positioning yourself in the victim role.

If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

If it rains, it rains. There is nothing you can do except put up an umbrella.

Making Progress towards Results

There is no “they”.

Love is discipline. Love is work.

Laziness is the life killer. Laziness is the original sin.

When in doubt, just take the next small step.

Commitment before success. Always.

Stop justifying. Break the “yes, but…” habit.

The most reliable predictor of what you will be doing 5 minutes from now is what you are doing now.

Break inertia. Every hour ask “Is this giving me long term benefit or short term happiness?” If No, No then Stop.

If you desire a specific effect in your life you must put in motion the cause of that effect.

Success is a process, not a product. Work on your process and the product will come.

Every time you blame someone, you give away your power to change things.

Leadership doesn’t happen when things are easy.

It is the final 1% that makes you world class.

Don’t see the wall.

A problem is only a problem if you choose to view it as a problem. It is an opportunity.

A dream will remain a dream until it is converted into disciplined, daily action.

If you see yourself as a victim, you will always be one.

Stop being a victim. (Stop enjoying other’s pity).
The circle of pity: The more you feel sorry for yourself, the worse your life will get.

Excuses are a way of not facing up to reality, for pulling out when things get a bit difficult.

One small step completed is a million times better than one big plan thought about.

Act instead of talking about it.

Next time you are about to complain, stop; explain what you are going to do about it.

The world does not owe you a living.
You have to pass the thorns to get to the roses.

The grass is not greener on the other side.

Refuse to use your past as an excuse.

Stop saying “yes, but…”

You don’t need permission. (For what it’s worth, you have mine.)

The problem contains the solution.
It takes 10 years to become an overnight success.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Justification is much, much easier than the hard reality of accepting responsibility.
Do it now.

If you rest too long, the weeds take the garden.

Activity finishes the miracle.

Stay Healthy

You can’t be great if you don’t feel great.
Keep fit.
Eat well.
Brush your teeth.
Dream. Play like a Child.
Don’t smoke.
Daily exercise is an insurance policy against future illness. Best leaders are fittest leaders.

Living with Purpose

Life is a gift.
Does today’s schedule reflect your deepest values?
Good students deliver what the teacher wants. Great students deliver what they know to be right.
The best is yet to come.
Imagination is the supreme uniqueness of humans. Use it.
Do not ask: “why me?”; Ask: “What can I learn? What can I do? Who can I help?”
Carpe diem. Memento mori. (Seize the day. Remember you shall die).
Integrity is much more than intention to be honest. It is having a system in place to deliver on your promises.
Say “No” more.
Chains of gold are no less chains than chains of iron.
Reason is the rudder. Passion is the sails. You need both.
You are not your little voice.
Success always starts with ambitious goals. Life gives what you ask of it.
We are educated for busy-ness, not for listening to our own minds at work.
Poverty is about much more than money.
Being everything to everyone is really being nobody to no one.
Success can only be measured from within.
Smell the roses.
Have fun. Every day.
Fun makes life worth living.
Everybody dies. Not everybody truly lives.
The world is not out to get you.
Life is not easy. Life is not fair. This is how it is.
There are always good reasons to be angry, disappointed, let down. Ignore them.
Listen to your angst. It is telling you something important. Don’t turn on the TV to avoid it. It will only get worse.
It is a marathon, not a sprint. It doesn’t matter if you are ahead at the mid-point, it matters that you reach the finish.
The opposite of play is not work, it is depression.
The opposite of love is not hate, it is apathy. It is believing that merely existing is actually living.
Remember where you are climbing to and don’t just stick to the ladder.
The unexamined life is not worth living, but the over-examined life isn’t worth living either.
Don’t compare your life to others; you have no idea what their journey is all about.
No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
The reward for conformity is that everybody likes you except yourself.
Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
Be true to yourself. Lying feels good. Until you are found out.
Take a walk with a turtle. Pause and see the journey.
Know the difference between price and value. A cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Personal Growth

The strongest steel is forged in the hottest furnaces.
Some answers can only come from inside.
Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in the presence of fear.
Your unconscious is wise. Its messages are often difficult. You need to listen carefully.
We are blind. Only other people can help us see clearly.
Make your emotions work for you, not you for them.
When you fall, focus on where you slipped, not where you fell.
We are most blind when we know the most. Assumptions so deep we cannot see them anymore.
Ask: “what did we learn today?” everyday.
Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.
Best way to learn to do it right is to first do it wrong.
The more you go to your limits, the more your limits will expand.
Mastering a few things is much better than mediocrity in many; and it is the route to mastery of big things.
Read daily.
Excellence in one area is the beginning of excellence in every area.

RULES OF AN ENTREPRENEUR

1) Make the commitment. You need to decide to be an entrepreneur and leave the traditional path behind. A good friend of mine, who has built a Ksh400M company, once told me that choosing to be an entrepreneur, deciding to give up the seemingly safe employer-employee world, is like disengaging from the matrix. Once you have experienced reality, you never want to go back.

2) Find a problem, then solve it. There are two types of businesses –“pain” and “pleasure.” “Pain” businesses have a higher success rate because they address more urgent problems. Venture out to address a problem that is personal, that you care about, that you would love to solve.

3) Think big. You can never build what you cannot imagine, so to build a business that has big impact, you have to believe you can do it from the start. You come at the problem with a calm confidence. There is no reason to scream “We can do it!” because you just know it; it’s inevitable. Whatever is stopping you for really believing you can do what your business plan says you can do, dissect it, extract it, and throw it away.

4) You can’t do it alone. There are two types of people: big-idea people and get-it-done people. Very few of us can do both. Be honest with yourself, decide which type you are, then find (hire or partner with) someone who complements you.

5) You must do it alone. Entrepreneurial journeys are lonely. When I launched my consulting business I spent every day for three weeks alone at my computer, working an Excel database I had built of 300 prospective clients, sending 100 emails a day, trying to get my first project. Even after you’ve gotten your business going and have built a team, you will find yourself alone. Leadership, after all, is having no one else to ask.

6) Manage risk. Most ventures fail because they run out of money. So never forget “DROOM”–Don’t Run Out of Money. Live by that motto. Calculate what you will need in the worst-case scenario and make sure you have enough. I do this every week now for my business, and I have not hit a cash crunch since.

7) Learn to lead. You will reach a point at which you must shift from managing to leading. This means setting a vision and communicating it. It means making promises (“We will get there”) and keeping them.

8) Learn to sell. This is my favorite. All innovators are sales people. They are selling every day–to investors, to employees, to suppliers, to customers. By convincing everyone that the iPod will change the world, Steve Jobs makes it so. Yet no business school I know of teaches sales! Study the sales process by reading books like SPIN Selling. Get practice by, for example, volunteering to raise funds for your favorite cause. But most importantly, find your passion. If you really believe your product and company and you share it passionately, you will become a magnet.

9) Persist. If you are willing to persist through the tough times, you have a much better chance of succeeding. Develop stubbornness.

10) Play the game for life. Don’t just do this for the money; do it to realize who you are, to create the life you are here to live. One of my favorite quotes from the book reads “Entrepreneurship…isn’t just about solving a problem, building a venture, managing risk, or making money. It’s about having a positive impact on the world, making the most of the gifts you’ve been given, and realizing your full potential as a human being.”

TAXATION

I am not a politician and neither am I fighting for any one. But due to the situation in this country let me vent a bit.

Look at our country, we have some of the lowest wage workers in the world, yet companies like Cadbury, Unilever and others closed shop, because they can’t afford the taxes. Companies like Nike and Adidas would rather go to China than Kenya because it’s cheaper there. Not wages, but operating cost.

But Danny it’s the Chinese debt. Actually it’s not. Chinese are loaning African countries money with little or no interest plus no conditions. After all most Chinese are now middle income earners so China needs a China and funding infrastructure in Africa opens a door for cheap labor and a business hub for Chinese people. But IMF and WB have conditions, so do Americans and other countries that are supporting us. Condition number one, high tax rates. So that you can prove you can pay the debt. China on the other hand, if Kenya has good roads it gives China access to Congo, Ethiopia and other countries that don’t have good ports to ship goods.

But Boss, government so creating jobs..
The answer is no, at least not as many people think.

For most Africans, government should be responsible for creating jobs. that`s a white lie. Governments are NOT responsible for job creation (though our constitution wrongly says they should).

Government don`t know how to and cannot create jobs.

The only thing government can do (and should do) is to create conducive environment and facilities that will help you and I to create jobs.

Yes, job creation is the duty of yourself and myself, for ourselves and other Africans. Unless working in the Military or being a teacher counts. You see the government is not a profit making entity. And out of 50 million Kenyans it can only employ 10% o give or take, so even if it employs 2,000,000 Kenyans we are still in trouble.

So instead of the West insisting on high taxes why don’t they push for tax cuts. These taxes have killed any possibility of economic development. Why are you killing any hope of us ever helping our selves? Because overtaxation means, no investors, no jobs and hence we are at the mercy of charity and loans. And for a guy who struggled paying Mshwari, KCB, branch and Tala among other mobile app loans i can assure you it’s a pit you don’t want on us unless you hate us.

The issue is not the East, the issue is the conditions of the West. I know you are a middle class earner and paying an extra 30 shillings on your fuel which is already above 100 shillings it’s not a biggie. But think of the family that the father is paid 200 shillings a day. How I’ll it affect them?

Taxes can’t raise any money if they kill the economy, if we want to save this country. Let’s be reasonable stop over taxation. Because the economic depression coming our way will be worse than Greece. We will never be able to grow our economy.

That’s all folks. What’s do you think? Am i wrong?
